Caecilian

Jonas Engel: reeds
Asger Thomsen: double bass
Ben Bennett: percussion

Caecilian is a trio that is not only about breaking musical norms, but about delving into the very essence of improvisation and sonic exploration.

Their music could be described as a tableau of urgency and reflective restraint, seeking to dig deeper into a playing that rely on precise gestures and a collective outcome balancing the intense momentum of a real-time composing that can go in any direction at any point.

Their combined experience and fearless approach result in music that is as challenging as it is captivating, constantly redefining what is possible in free improvisation. The synergy between their acoustic experimentation creates an intense and unpredictable musical dialogue, with each member challenging the others to transcend their traditional roles. The result is performances that are as unpredictable as they are immersive.

They met for a European tour in 2025 where they played concerts in churches, underground venues and a kiosk. They have done workshops, worked with strictly acoustic approaches as well as experimented with extreme amplification. Their debut album is to be released on US label Dinzu Artefact in 2026.
